OUR MISSION
About Lower Moss Wood
Lower Moss Wood is an 18-acre educational nature reserve and working wildlife hospital at Ollerton, near Knutsford. The wood is a place for schools, groups with disabilities and other organised parties to learn about conservation and the countryside. Alongside that, the hospital treats around two to three thousand sick, injured and orphaned wild animals and birds each year, with the aim of returning them to the wild. The reserve is not open to the general public except by prior arrangement.
Rehabilitation
The wildlife hospital treats sick, injured and orphaned British wildlife, from foxes and badgers to hedgehogs and fledgling birds. Every decision is made for the animal. Where recovery allows, patients are rehabilitated and released back to the wild.
Your gifts keep the wood alive
Lower Moss Wood is a charity. Food, heating, veterinary bills and the running of the hospital and reserve depend on gifts. Donations keep wildlife in care and the wood open for education.
It takes a team
Staff cannot do this work alone. Volunteers feed patients, clean, help on the land and welcome visiting groups. Without them the hospital and reserve could not function.
Preservation
The 18-acre reserve is a working haven of woodland, ponds and quiet ground. It is kept for wildlife first, not as a public park. Care of the wood protects the habitats that wild animals and birds need to survive.
Education
The reserve and education centre give schools, disability groups and other organised parties a place to learn about conservation in the countryside. Visits are by arrangement, so people can enjoy the wood without turning it into an open attraction.
